For a long time, Birmingham was the kind of town most people only saw when driving past on their way to somewhere else. Stigma over the distinctive ‘Brummie’ accent and jokes about the rough and characterless nature of the city created a caricature of men dressed in Rockport shoes, Helly Hanson tracksuit tops and thick white sports socks.
