A hot stone massage therapy, one of the most common massage therapies in the world, is a type of classic massage therapy that uses non-rough, flat stones that are made from volcanic rocks, and placed on the key points of the body. Sometimes, therapists also use the stone as a massaging tool in certain parts of the body. History of the this type of massage is dated back up to the ancient times, but it went popular when Mary Nelson, a massage therapist based in Arizona, created her own hot stone massage technique called LaStone Therapy. Since then, it is used by people all over the world.

The stones that are used in this therapy massage are made of basalt, a kind of rock that has iron, which helps to retain heat in it. They prefer basalt rocks from the river since it is normally smoother, as it have been smoothed by the river’s current for a long time. The stones then are placed in an electric heating device, until they are in the specific heat range. The stones are then placed at the key pints, found in the back, in the palm or in between toes. The therapists can increase thepressure on the client while using the heat, so that the muscles bebome less tense. Also, the warmth of the stones helps in restoring the circulation and relaxes the nervous system, thus you will feel relaxed. Some therapists believe that the key points are where the energy of our body is centered, which helps put our mind in the state of equilibrium.

Many people love this type of massage therapy. The effect of a hot stone massage is incredible and you feel really relaxed. Also, it relaxes the muscles and since it allows the therapists to use deep pressure without the uncomfortable feeling, it is also less painful.
