Stretch marks (or striae as they are referred to in dermatological terms) can be caused when an individual’s skin is stretched rapidly : to be precise, the skin’s second layer (the dermis), becomes torn due to over stretching. The worst affected places are the stomach, breasts, thighs and hips. People of all ages can suffer from them and they affect a lot of people. Fortunately, our health is not affected by them and only blemish the skin. Of course, these concerns grow in the warmer seasons as the amount of our bodies we show, increases.

How do stretchmarks occur?

This Stretching happens when the body expands at a rate which the skin can’t stretch quick enough to keep up with it. Stretch marks are generally associated with pregnancy but can develop during puberty: sudden weight gain and even body building can also result in stretch marks.

Although the skin is usually fairly elastic , when it stretches, the normal production of collagen is disrupted. collagen to keep skin tight and supple. When they first form, stretch marks stand out as red / purple lines. They are indented and feel different to the rest of the skin. as they get older, the deep colour fades, turning a silvery colour. The ability to heal however does vary considerably from individual to individual.

Removal of stretch marks

Treatment for stretch marks can be done in several different ways. Stretch mark treatments vary wildly in cost and effectiveness, treatments range from creams purchased over the counter to expensive surgical procedures for a lot of people, stretch marks are ugly and undesirable and prevent people from wearing what they like, but this is overcome or eliminated by treatment to remove stretch marks.

cream is one form of stretch marks removal treatment which is easy to obtain and easily used however, only a minor percentage of cream is absorbed into the skin therfore, creams are not really the best treatment for stretch marks. However, using creams with techniques such as skin needling, allows a much higher percentage of cream absorbed by the skin so this method often proves the easiest method for most individuals.
