Why Unisex Clothes Just Don’t Work

Back in the seventies or eighties, clothing manufacturers started pushing ‘unisex’ clothes. It caught on for a little while, but it didn’t last. Instead, women started wearing men’s clothes and accessories, while men just stuck with men’s.

A lot of things have changed over the years and thankfully men are no longer stuck with wearing bland clothes, a wristwatch and closely cropped hair in order to prove they’re men. Long hair is acceptable, as is jewelry, even earrings. However, a man would never choose a dainty pair of rhodium earrings. Most men stick with studs or a single earring that has a masculine look to it.

Women, on the other hand can wear whatever jewelry they want to wear. A bulky men’s watch can look terrific on a woman’s wrist, but have you ever seen a man wear a bejewelled woman’s watch to work?

Men today can wear earrings, necklaces and bracelets. What they can’t wear, though, is a jewelry set. If a man is wearing earrings, they should either look like pirate’s earrings or something his girlfriend picked out for him. If he’s wearing a necklace, it should be something he found when he was traveling or have religious or other significance for him. It should never be part of a set just because it matches. Only women can wear jewelry sets simply because they match.

In just about every department of fashion, it is the same. Women can look sexy and alluring in men’s clothing, but men just look gay in women’s apparel. That’s fine if a man is gay, but if he’s not, he had better take heed: there is nothing macho or sexy about women’s clothes on a man.

Strangely enough, it’s even true of the common sweatshirt. Women can look unbelievably sexy in a man’s sweatshirt – almost as if they’re wearing a bikini. What do girls sweatshirts look like on men, though. You don’t even want to go there, do you?

Women look great in men’s jeans. Sometimes they look more than great -they look fantastic, especially if the jeans have been tailored for them. When was the last time you saw a man in a woman’s skirt, though? There’s no such thing and no designer has ever been able to come up with ’skirts for men.’

Nobody knows for sure why these things are so. They just are. Women look good and lose nothing of their femininity in men’s clothes and accessories. The converse isn’t true, though. Unisex clothes didn’t work because they weren’t masculine enough for men or women. About the only item of unisex clothing that stuck was the yoga drawstring pant. The best advice for men is to do your shopping in a men’s store.
